FAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral form where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. It is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition, modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisherisn practices,ensuring good nutrition and food security for all. Its Latin motto, fiat panis, translates into English as "let there be bread".
FAO was founded on 16th October 1945 in Quebec City, Canada. In 1951, its headquarters were moved from Washington DC, USA to Rome Italy.
FAO in the Pacific
The tasks of the Sub Regional Office for the Pacific, are to assist the governments and local communities of the Pacific Islands, in developing sustainable food sources, preventing environmental degradation and supporting stable, political development in the region. We aim to improve the wellbeing of the people of the Pacific Island countries through the application of agriculture and with the management and sustainable development of their living resources. The Sub Regional Office in the Pacific collects, analyzes and disseminates information relating to nutrition, food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. It provides farmers, scientists, government planners, traders and non government organizations with essential information to make rational decisions on planning, investments, marketing, research and training.
