World Health Organisation

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations for health. It was established on April 7th 1948 and is governed by 192 Member States through the World Health Assembly. WHO's objective is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO's constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

WHO in Samoa

The WHO office in Samoa covers 5 countries: American Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tokelau. Each country receives a regular budget allocation and the national government decides on the activities to be implemented during the planning phase of the budget, based on the health priorities and strategies. In addition WHO provides additional funds for participation to regional meetings, inter-country projects or specific priority areas.

WHO's work in the Pacific Region is organised according to the following four programme themes:

  • Combating Communicable Diseases

  • Building Healthy Communitities and Populations

  • Health Sector Development

  • Reaching Out
